Should Congress block states from regulating AI for a decade?

In May 2025, the U.S. Congress passed a bill to block states and cities from making their own rules about artificial intelligence (AI) for the next 10 years. Supporters say this will help create one clear national rule, instead of a messy patchwork of laws in every state. They argue that it makes things easier for companies to grow and stay ahead in global tech, especially against countries like China. But many lawmakers from both parties strongly disagree. They say states should be able to respond to local problems like deepfakes, unfair AI decisions, privacy issues, and hacking. More than 260 state lawmakers sent a letter to Congress asking them not to block local control. They believe local governments know their communities better and can act faster when new risks appear. The key question is this: Should AI rules be made only by the federal government to keep things simple and competitive? Or should states have the freedom to protect their people and try their own solutions?
