Crossing the Wall We all live within walls. We seek safety and stability, but the wall is merely another name for fear. The first wall we encounter in Attack on Titan is not simply a structure to protect humanity from Titans. It was a prison for memories, a form of self-deception to flee from the truth. Eren wanted to cross that wall. It wasn’t mere curiosity, but a vague conviction that a “real world” lay beyond. That desire eventually shattered the wall and opened his eyes to the world. And the freedom we had imagined was stained with blood and riddled with contradictions. There were people outside the wall, who also built walls out of fear of Titans, and took up arms to protect their families—just like us. Even those we called “enemies” had their reasons, and “we” became monsters to others in return. This world cannot be defined by a single voice. Everyone was right, and everyone was wrong. In that tangled web of complex relationships, Attack on Titan asks: “What is true freedom?” Freedom is not obtained by trampling on someone else’s rights. True freedom is the courage to overcome hatred and choose understanding. That process is always painful. We must forgive others, and sometimes doubt even our own choices. Was the path Eren chose justified? Is the dialogue Armin envisioned truly achievable? All these questions come back to us. What kind of wall do we live behind now? Are we ready to face the truth beyond it? Attack on Titan tells us this: Humans, even amidst endless contradictions, still love, protect, and move forward. And that is why we are not monsters. But still, we live behind walls. We take the subway at the same time every day, follow a fixed routine, and return home. We meet family, we meet friends, and we believe this is freedom. But perhaps, we are merely creatures running inside an invisible cage— a squirrel on a wheel. Freedom is not something beyond the wall. It begins the moment we realize the wall exists.
